WOOD SHAKES AND SHINGLES
Add charm and character with a wooden roof!
A wooden roof is a great way to give your home a classic look while keeping all the protection of a traditional asphalt roof. MCG Roofing is ready to help you make an informed decision about adding wooden shakes and shingles to your home.

TRADITIONAL LOOK
What are wooden shakes and shingles?
Wooden shakes and shingles are typically made from cedar boards and then treated to resist rotting and bug damage. Cedar shingles are uniformly cut pieces of wood, and cedar shakes generally are more imprecise in their shape and cut. Of all the traditional roof coverings, cedar shake is warm, organic, and rustic in a very stylish fashion! Cedar was once very popular for roofing and siding, as resources for old-growth cedar trees were abundant. Over time, that has changed, and today cedar roofing is more of a high-end delicacy of property owners and architects.
CEDAR SHAKE
Cedar Shake Versus Cedar Shingles
Cedar shake shingles usually are tapered (taper sawn), rectangular, and about 16-24 inches long. Edges of the split shake usually are “irregular” by design, giving them a rough-hewn, naturally contoured appearance. More highly processed shake shingles have cleaner edges. These are called “rebutted and re-squared” (R&R) shingles. Different species of wood are used, and shake shingle lengths can vary. Because wood shake is more susceptible to fires, today’s cedar roofing materials are treated with fire retardant chemicals, making them Class A Fire Rated in many cases.
